2 Babies, A Walk and a Buggy 09/17/2011

Helen, now 21 realized it was a little over 3 years ago that she and Willie sat in the front porch swing at her mom and dads and decided to get married!  It's hard to believe that what started out as a friendship turned into a love that has produced these 2 sweet babies.  She had always heard that there was nothing like the love of a mother...now she knows first hand.  She loved being a mom.  Nursing Sondra was a little more of a challenge than when she was nursing Larry, because now she basically had 2 babies, because Larry was still so little.  After all, he was only 18 months old when his little sissy came along.  He was getting somewhat used to sharing his mom's lap...there were times when he didn't like it...but he loved his little sissy!  He may not understand why this little baby that cries a lot is getting all this attention ...but he does know that she is special to his mommy and daddy...so she is special to him.

So much for living in Kewanee...Willie and Helen got the news that Shelton and Una Mae needed to move back into their place.  It had been nice living up the road from Roy and Eunice, but oh well...if nothing else, this young couple had learned to go with the flow.  It looks as if they were going to be moving to New Madrid about 7 miles south.

There was a little house on the corner of Davis and Crisler Street right across from the High School that would suit them just fine.  They moved the little family into the big town of New Madrid (at least compared to Kewanee it was big).  Willie got the vanity mirror hung on the wall, the curtains hung, bed put together and the goat hide bottomed chairs put in the kitchen.  Helen had washed and put away the dishes and put sheets on the bed.  They were both getting pretty good at this moving thing.

Willie continued to drive his Cadillac to LaForge each day to teach.  (just kidding, he drove his ole floorboardless jalopy).  One pretty spring day while he was teaching those young minds about math and history, Helen decided she was tired of being cooped up in the house.  She dressed Larry in a cute little outfit and put a bonnet on Sondra and wrapped her in a receiving blanket and headed out walking.  She wanted to walk to downtown New Madrid to the five and dime (yes there used to be dime stores).  Just to be able to look around, even if she couldn't afford to buy, would be a treat for her.

Carrying Sondra in her arms and holding on to Larry's hand as he walked alongside her, she headed down the sidewalk determined to reach her destination.  On the way a lady was sitting on her porch as Helen was passing by...she called out to them..."Hello sweetie!  Where you headed?"  Helen told her they were taking a trip to town.  The lady asked if she would like to borrow a buggy and of course the answer was yes!  Helen put both of the babies in the stroller and continued their trip to town.  They had a wonderful time!  Larry got some candy at the five and dime, he and Sissy got some fresh air in their ride in a stroller and Helen enjoyed time away from the house.

On their way back home from their outing, Helen knocked on the door of the stroller lady and returned this blessing on wheels. She never forgot the kindness of the lady who saw a need and met it.
