Flour Sacks and Pinafores 09/27/2011

Helen had been saving her printed cloth flour sacks for a very good reason.  She was so excited to have a girl to sew for and would use those sacks to make some sweet little pinafores with bonnets to match for Sondra.  She wouldn't use patterns purchased from the Kewanee Mercantile, she would instead make her own.

Eunice (her mom) owned a Singer Treadle Sewing Machine (you peddled it to sew...no electricity) and welcomed Helen to come down to her house to use it.  This was the same machine that Louise, Helen's older sister, used to sit at and make clothes for all her brothers and sisters.  I'm sure if she ran into any snags working on that old Singer, she could ask  Louise or her mom to help her.

Have you ever tried to measure a wiggly little one year old?  It is not the easiest thing to do, but Helen wanted to cut out some patterns so she could start making those pinafores for Sondra, so she grabbed, held and measured as best she could!  After she had the pattern cut out, she let out the seams of the laundered flour sacks and spread them out on her kitchen table.  She put the pattern on the material and cut around it very carefully, because she didn't want to mess up the only material she had right now.

Time to gather up her sewing supplies and the kids so they could go to Grandma and Grandpa Rhodes house for a sewing adventure.  When they arrived, her mom was the only one up at the house because Betty, Skipper, Violet and Scrogg were all out in the field with their dad working.  Helen remembered those days of being a field hand for her dad...she felt bad for her brothers and sisters out there right now...she knew what they were going through.

The pinafores were precious and she couldn't have been happier with how they looked on Sondra.  Who would have thought that printed flour sacks would look so cute...but they sure did!
