Movin Movin Movin...Keep Those Babies Movin 09/13/2011
Helen loved being a mom and everything that went with it. As she nursed her baby boy and looked into those big brown eyes, she knew he had won her heart forever. Thank goodness her dad had given her that rocking chair when they moved into that little house. A couple of her favorite things to do was rock Larry in that rocking chair while singing a lullaby to him. Oh if she could just hold him all day...but there were chores to be done. She would cook all their meals on that 2 burner oil stove propped up with the orange crates, and make biscuits almost daily. (I don't think there were any complaints of hard biscuits-even if they could knock out a rooster) If she needed water to cook with or bathe, she had to go next door to her neighbors pump and get water and carry it home. When she gathered up her laundry, she would take it down to her moms to use her machine, then hang out to dry on the clothes line. Nothing like clean sheets dried in the sunshine. When it was time for a bath....Willie or Helen would go next door and pump buckets of water and heat them up on the oil stove. When the water was just the right temperature, they would pour it in their #3 washtub then step in. What a wonderful feeling to put those clean bodies in those clean sheets just brought in off the clothesline earlier in the day. While Willie was at work at the cotton gin everyday, he would think about his little family and wonder what he could do differently so that he could move them out of that shotgun house with the outside toilet. Even though the outdoor john was around the corner of the house next to a garden...on a windy day that smell couldn't be disguised. So Willie always kept his eyes and ears open so he wouldn't miss an opportunity to move into a better situation. Well, moving day came when he had the chance to take his family to a little town called Farrenburg, Missouri. An opportunity to run a little grocery store seemed liked a good idea and something they could do together. The store had an apartment attached where they could live. They would run the store during the day then go home right next door in the evening. A few months later...Helen's brother, Shelton, was moving out of his 3 room house in Kewanee and offered to let Willie and Helen live there. (did they move there?...find out tomorrow) Comments Your comment will be posted after it is approved. Leave a Reply | _Author
