Sissy is One Today! 09/26/2011
Helen purchased her 25 pound block of ice for her icebox, put away her perishables and unpacked her last box of dishes that had been wrapped in towels. The ice should keep things cool enough for a couple of days, then she would buy another block. Sondra would be turning one year old tomorrow and she wanted to be able to bake her a cake, but just didn't have the money to do that. Willie being away made it even more difficult to celebrate...but Sondra would never know...Helen would smile and try to make it a happy birthday for her baby girl. For tonight, she needed to just relax for a bit and read her unfinished book. She would put the kids down early, so she could have some time by herself. She looked in on her babies to make sure they were asleep. She went in the bedroom, pulled the covers up around their tiny shoulders and kissed them on the cheek. Look at those sweet little faces...you would never know by looking at them now that earlier today they had mud all over them from making "mud pies". Now for that alone time! She grabbed her glass of tea, her romance novel and her blanket and headed to the rocker. She turned up the wick on the coal oil lamp so she could get back to where she had left off on her book. She enjoyed reading and it helped her get drowsy so she would go straight to sleep when her head hit the pillow. She never stayed up much later than the kids, because she knew they would be raring to go at first light. Even more so in the morning...it would be April 9th and someone is having a birthday! Helen yawned and stretched as she woke to sunlight coming through the apartment window. At the foot of her bed was Larry making engine noises as he drove his pretend car. Sondra was awake too, but was still in her bed talking to anyone that would listen. Sissy being able to talk early would serve Larry well in the days ahead. He wasn't doing so well in that area...no one could understand a word he said. Well it was Sondra's birthday so Helen and Larry would do what they could to make it special. They kept calling her the birthday girl all day and after lunch that day, they sang "Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Sissy...Happy Birthday to you!" Sondra smiled from ear to ear...she had no clue that she would have gotten a present from her mommy if she could have afforded to buy her one. She just knew that she was special today...it was her birthday! (side note from Paula: As I write this post today...I am eating my dad's favorite candy! If he went to the store, he would usually have a bag of Maple Nut Goodies when he got home! I went to the store...and I came home with a bag of em') CommentsCharlene Pruett 09/28/2011 4:05pm
Maple Nut Goodies was a favorite candy of my Mom's too! Love the stories, they make my day more enjoyable!

That explains the Maple Nut Goodies. Mom would always buy them when we were going on trips. I do the same thing for my kids today. I am so happy that you are writing this down. But, you've made me tear up more times tonight than I have in a long time.
