Sleep Walking - Burglar and Blinds 09/19/2011

When Willie was a little boy, he and his sister Polly were avid sleepwalkers.  Not by choice of course, they just seemed to have it in there genes.  Missouri Jane and Frank had to look in on them before retiring for the night and sometimes check on them during the night.

It was one of those nights and Polly was nowhere to be found.  They searched all over the house but no Polly...where is she this time?  They decided it was time to check with the neighbors, and sure enough, there she was on the neighbors front porch. She had arrived and knocked on their door asking to borrow milk...eyes opened and glazed.  She wasn't awake when she knocked on the door but woke up confused and afraid.  On another night, Willie was the one not in his bed.  Frank went outside...looked around the tractor and under the porch...where could he have gone?  Missouri Jane continued to look all through the house and finally found him all curled up behind a big ole chair.  These kids and their sleepwalking, hopefully they would grow out of it.

Fast forward to Davis Street and and a grown up Willie sleeping in that bed he had worked so hard to buy.  He'd had a long day at work and he and Helen had turned in early. Something jarred Helen awake and she saw Willie crawling across the floor.  And because of his history of sleep walking, she naturally thought that was what was going on, so she hollered, "WILLIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"  He turned his head up to her and said, "Well I was going to catch a burglar, but I guess I won't now!"  He wasn't sleep walking at all, He had really thought he had heard a burglar at the window.

During the night the wind had picked up causing the blinds to rattle and bang against the open window waking him up.  It was instinct to protect his family, so he slipped out of the bed and was crawling across the floor to sneak up on the intruder when Helen saw him.  The rest is history!

They would share this story with their kids - it was one of those not so funny at the time it's happening... but later would be hilarious when retold a generation later.
