Sondra in a bucket and cleaning to do! 09/23/2011
Helen just knew living anywhere was better than staying in this rat infested apartment. Bread was too expensive to let the larger variety of rodents carry it off and enjoy! Time to look for a place to call home in Kewanee! (this moving thing is about to get old) No looking for a new place today...got to catch up on some laundry! She dressed the kids in their last clean outfit and headed downstairs to her Aunt Violet's back porch. The old Maytag Ringer Washer that was kept on the porch did a good job, but was a lot of work with two kids to watch. Sondra would be turning one in a few weeks and had been walking since she was 7 months old. She was about as curious as could be and she and Larry played so well together. They seemed to know how to get into mischief without even trying. The first load was done and Helen drained the dirty water into a big lard bucket. While she was gathering up the next load, she heard a splash! Oh no!!!! There in that dirty dish water was Sondra head first with her feet kicking in the air. Helen grabbed her up in her arms and dried her off. She was crying because it had frightened her, but she wasn't the only one that was scared. This was Helen's first time to have an alarming episode to deal with by herself. She knew in her heart had she not been right there, Sondra could have drown in that bucket full of dirty water! She shared with Aunt Violet that she was going to have to find another place to live. Her aunt totally understood because she had seen a rat or two herself. That's what happens when there is a field behind your house...it's bound to happen. Comments09/23/2011 1:06pm
I remember helping my mother do the washing(laundry) on an old wringer Maytag! I love your stories, please tell your mother. I know she is proud that you are writing them. Keep them coming, please!

I guess I never realized that mom and Uncle Larry were the same age difference as Grant and Merideth. I guess my kids mischieviousness is just a repeat of their Great Uncle Larry and Nana's.
