Willie on A Bus - Helen Back Home 09/21/2011

The ride to Michigan was difficult for Willie!  He rolled up his jacket,  put it under his head and closed his eyes.  The bus ride today was long, but not as long as it was going to be because after this ride, he would be headed to Bremerton, Washington for basic training.  His mind wouldn't let him sleep...it kept drifting back to the bus station in Missouri where his little family had stood waving to him.  He loved Helen and the children so much, but knew this was something he had to do.  He felt relieved to know she was not alone with the kids in New Madrid, but instead was with her Aunt and Uncle in Matthews.

Helen climbed the stairs with Sondra on her hip and pulled Larry up the steps behind her.  Oh my goodness...she was alone and this apartment was a sight.  Could she do this without Willie?  She was determined to be strong, because there was no doubt her husband was doing what he had to do.  She knew these babies were depending on her to be strong and make good decisions...so be strong she would be.  That first night they slept in the small bedroom above that old garage... even though it felt kind of creepy.

Helen decided that they would go visit with her mom and dad in Kewanee for a few days.  This would be a good diversion for her and familiar place for the kids.

She enjoyed her visit with mom and dad, but knew she needed to get back to the apartment.   When she returned to the apartment with Larry and Sondra, she looked the place over and noticed that there were signs where rats had been in her bed.  There was no way she and the kids were gonna sleep in there.  She took the bed apart, moved it and the dresser to the front room and put on clean sheets.  They would just all sleep in there away from the rats.  This adventure in Matthews was going to be tougher than she had at first thought.

Okay...we are all in the living room....let's get some sleep!  Helen and the kids were down for the night, but as she started to relax... eyes getting droopy...she watched as a rat carried off a whole loaf of bread one piece at a time.  THAT WAS IT!!!  THE RATS CAN HAVE THIS PLACE!!!!

She would look for something in Kewanee close to her folks.  Oh no...not another move...but she HAD to do it...not only was it creepy to have big ole rats in the same apartment with you...it was just down right nasty!  She couldn't stay here with the rats in this creepy place.
