A Watch for Daddy! 10/15/2011

After Helen found out that the candy deal didn't work out so well, she wanted to do something really nice for Willie!  He would never ask for something like this, but the more she thought about it, the more excited she became.  She'd find a watch for him...she'd surprise him with it for his birthday on June 18th.  Money was so tight, but she could put it on lay away at that store in New Madrid and pay on it every time she had a little money.   If she started paying on it now...she could have it ready to send to him right before his birthday.  Yep...that was the plan, she would get Willie a watch by his next birthday.  Even if it meant she would have to make a lot of soup and beans ...that was okay...Willie needed a watch dagummit, and she was going to make sure he got one.

She dressed Larry and Sondra and headed down to her mom and dads.  It was Saturday and they would be heading to New Madrid for their weekly weekend trip.  She loved going to New Madrid to shop...there were just so many places to choose from to window shop and find just what you needed.  Main street on a Saturday morning was always bustling in the big town of New Madrid.  It wasn't too big for folks to remember Eunice and her wares though.  She would take her fresh eggs and butter around to the stores and most were eager to get items fresh from the farm.

When they got to New Madrid, they all separated and went their separate ways.  Eunice would make her way around town and sell all of the things she had brought that day.  She would then go to get some groceries that she needed to take them to next Saturday.  Roy would go to the neighborhood bar and get his weekend tipsy on. Helen and the kids would go looking for that watch.

Helen found just the watch she would get for Willie.  It was waterproof and had a winding stem so he could both set it and keep it wound for keeping good time.  She paid a little down on it and would pay every time she came to town until she could pay it off.

The kids were excited too when they realized that this would be for their daddy.  Helen showed them pictures of him all the time so they wouldn't forget who he was while he was away at war.
