Another Saturday Trip with Eunice and Roy 10/18/2011
It was the weekend and time for that Saturday trip to New Madrid. Helen had finally saved enough money that she would be able to get the watch out of lay-away. It was the spring of 1945 and Willie has been gone almost a year now. Helen gets out her wallet almost daily to show Larry and Sondra a picture of daddy! She never wants them to forget who daddy is while he is serving his country. When they looked at his picture, she would ask them who it was and they would always say..."daddy"! Going to New Madrid with Eunice and Roy was always sort of bittersweet because she would get to be out of the house, but also knew that her dad would be going to the bar again. That was a given...he always went to the bar and would be drunk by the time they were ready to head home. He was definitely a weekend drunk, and never gave it a second thought how dangerous it was to get behind the wheel. Eunice had a few garden veggies to sell today. She had brought some green onions, leaf lettuce and new potatoes she had gotten out of the garden just this morning along with her fresh eggs. It should be a pretty good day selling her fresh from the farm items...she just knew people will love seeing her coming. Helen headed straight for the store to get the watch out of lay-away. She couldn't wait to box it up and wrap it in brown paper tied with string addressed to William Triplett Tollison S1C, F Div. USS West Virginia, % Fleet Post Office, San Francisco, California...she knew the address by heart. He will be so surprised! She loved surprising him and making him smile! He was her sweetheart forever! After Helen and the kids made their trip to the post office, they met back up with mom and dad...and you guessed it, Roy was drunk. She will never get used to getting in that vehicle with her dad driving after he had been in the bar the whole time they were in town. They made it home and she breathed a sigh of relief! All she can think of after getting home was the fact that she had done it...she had pulled off her surprise to Willie and he would be getting his watch way before his birthday on June 18th. As a lady who's lived through both good & bad circumstances in my life, I've learned and continue to learn a lot of "life lessons". Along the way I have been inspired to be a better me. God is faithful in ALL circumstances and His love covers all. My hope is that you will be inspired to be who you were meant to be.
