Letters, family and laundry 10/09/2011
Helen had lots to write in her letter tonight! It had been an exhausting day, one that she didn't want to relive, but wanted to share it with Willie. When her brothers and sisters came running up the road with Larry...she was brave and did the mom thing, but oh my gosh...it had scared the living daylights out of her. She told Willie about Larry's exciting adventure of getting a knot on his noggin and a scratch that may leave a scar! Even as she writes this she has a little shiver thinking of how today could have ended. Larry was fine, thank the Lord...but for some reason didn't ask if he could go back to the field with his aunts and uncles. That would change though, cause he loved being around them. Before she drifted off to sleep she thought about her siblings and knew they were so scared when they brought Larry to her. Scrog was only eight at the time, so he wasn't much older than Larry and was expected to be out in the field with the rest of his brothers and sisters doing whatever Roy, their dad, had them do for the day. Before she married...she was out there with them being her dad's "field hand". It was hard work, no time for playing around when there was work to be done. Her last thoughts for the day was a prayer of thankfulness for her family and that her firstborn was going to be fine. Everyday after the kids had their naps, Helen would take Larry and Sondra to visit with her mom. Eunice sure loved babies ...especially her grandbabies. When Helen got there, her mom would stop what she was doing and love on Larry and Sondra. She and Helen would sit on the screened in porch...it gave Eunice a break from cooking and cleaning up after everyone. Sometimes Helen would help her peel potatoes while she visited. She never took any food home from her mom and dads though...she was on her own there. Two or three times a week Helen would gather up her laundry and take it to moms to laundry. They didn't have a lot of clothes ...but what they had was kept clean and ready for wearin'. The beautiful fall weather was great for hanging the clothes out on the line and smelled so good when you brought them into the house. She was going to ask Willie in her next letter if there was anything he wanted her to send to him. I'm sure there are things that he doesn't have on the ship...
