Shuckin Corn takes a bad turn 10/08/2011
Helen is holding down the fort so to speak on the home-front! A day never goes by that she doesn't think of Willie and wonder what he is doing at that very minute. The letters that she writes everyday make it to the ship about once every 3 weeks or so. They first arrive in California and from there are put on a plane that drops them on the Wee Vee. Willie looks forward to getting that stack of letters from Helen. He puts them in order and cherishes every word of every letter. Just hearing about the cute things the kids are doing help to make what he was doing there on the battleship bearable. Larry is another year older and still needs Sissy to be his interpreter. He is your typical boy...always looking for an adventure. He got an adventure he would never forget the day he went with his aunts and uncles to the field. He loved being around his Aunt Betty, Uncle Skipper and Uncle Scrog ...so when they asked his mom if he could go with them out in the field, he was so excited. Larry had fun riding piggy back on his Uncle Skipper's back to the wagon waiting at the edge of the corn patch. They made sure that he was in a safe place on the wagon before having the ole mule pull them to the other side of the field. They would stop the wagon, pick the corn then shuck it as they moved back toward the house. By the time they got back to there, all the corn they'd picked would be shucked. At one of their stops, they had lost track of Larry and didn't realize that he was off the wagon and was climbing on the wheel trying to get to the mule. The mule moved forward and when it did...Larry was spun to the ground and the wheel ran over his head. When Betty, Scrog and Skipper heard him scream...they realized what had happened. They grabbed him up and went running up the road to tell Helen that Larry had accidentally been run over by mule drawn wagon. They were running in a panic because they just knew that their little buddy was hurt bad. As it turns out Larry was crying so hard because it had scared him and he knew that his aunts and uncles were worried and running with him. He only had a little scratch on his head...(he still has a scar on his head to this day) I guess that could be where the meaning of hard headed came from...
