The USS West Virginia is calling his name... 10/04/2011
The day that Willie and Helen had dreaded for the past 2 weeks was here. This time the leaving was harder because they both knew that it would be for a very long time. Willie had been preparing himself for this very moment for quite some time now. Even while he was away from his family during basic training, he mentally was getting himself ready to leave them again. Helen told him that she would write to him everyday...even when there would not be much to say...she would write. She would have someone take pictures of her and the kids to send to him. He went to see his mom and dad (Missouri Jane and Frank) who were very proud of their son! Of course they had always been proud of Willie! He was their first born and had always been very responsible. He loved them and wanted to hug and kiss his momma and shake his dad's hand. He couldn't leave without hugging his brother and sister too...he didn't get to see them much while he was home and wanted to be sure and say his goodbyes to them. Willie had shared with his family that he was going to be stationed on the modernized version of the USS West Virginia Battleship. It had been docked at Puget Sound Navy Yard... Washington where it had been redone and would be ready for battle. Below is a picture of the new and improved ship (it had suffered during the bombing of Pearl Harbor). This is where Willie would spend the next 3 years of his life. He would miss his family, but would gladly serve his country in the United States Navy. Helen and Willie again said their goodbyes... As a lady who's lived through both good & bad circumstances in my life, I've learned and continue to learn a lot of "life lessons". Along the way I have been inspired to be a better me. God is faithful in ALL circumstances and His love covers all. My hope is that you will be inspired to be who you were meant to be. I have been writing this blog about my mom and dad since September of 2011. You can find their story from the beginning by going to the Stories link. Happy Reading!!! ArchivesMarch 2012 |
