Yummy Candy and peanuts 10/10/2011
Helen finally received some letters and cards from Willie! She was so happy to hear from him. He didn't talk much about the war...just assured her that he was fine. That's the way he was though...he didn't want her to worry, he knew she had enough on her plate with taking care of his baby girl and little boy! Willie had so much to be thankful for and just prayed this war would be over and he could once again be with his family in their little apartment in Kewanee. He was craving Helen's candy. She made the best fudge and divinity ever! Oh and she also made some mean peanut brittle...it made your tongue slap your cheeks! I wonder if she could make that and send to him? So in his letter to her, he asked if she could make some of that candy and air mail to him. He didn't dare share with her about the danger he was in on a daily basis, and he knew that she was having a harder time than she was letting on without him too! They didn't want one worrying about the other. He did love her, but was just not the mushy type...so he signed his letter like he did everything he sent to her...simply..."Wild Bill". Helen would do anything for Willie and if he wanted candy...then by golly he would have candy. She made a batch of fudge, divinity and peanut brittle, boxed it up and took it to the little Post Office in the Mercantile Store not thinking about the heat it would have to go through before arriving on the ship. When the package wrapped in brown paper finally arrived on the ship... Willie's mouth was watering just thinking about that box of yummy candy. There on the top of the package was Helen's handwriting, he'd recognize it anywhere. He tore off the paper and opened the box anticipating what kind of candy was awaiting him. As he looked inside, what he saw was so disappointing...the candy had totally melted from the heat and all that was left in the bottom of the box was the peanuts from the peanut brittle. Bless her heart...she had tried to do something nice for her Willie and look at these pitiful peanuts with no brittle. The box smelled awfully good though...he smiled and ate the peanuts. He almost hated to tell Helen that her wonderful candy ended up just being peanuts by the time it got to him. He'd tell her though...they would laugh at the memory!
