A Cold Car and A Case for Quilts 11/27/2011

When they went to bed on that Saturday night, the carnival was still going strong with ferris wheels turning and funnel cakes cooking.  When they woke up on Sunday morning to get ready for church the scene across the street was totally different.  All the rides were gone, all the stands were put away and every piece of trash had been picked up.  You couldn't even tell that carnival barkers had been there or squeals of delight had filled the air the previous night.  The carnival in East Prairie had been put away for another year and the baseball field looked as good as new.

_The school year had begun and it would soon be time for Larry to put away his scooter.  He loved riding up and down the street on that little two wheeled scooter powered by his other foot.  He wouldn't put it away completely though...he would just have to wait until he got home from school to have his scooter adventures.  Winter was approaching and he would not be able to spend as much time on it either.  He would have to think of other things to do.

One of Larry's  favorite things other than the scooter, was getting in his dad's old car and pretend he was starting it up and revving the motor, then driving it all over the place.  His interest in cars would prove to be an important fact later on in his life. He could tell you the make and model of most cars even at his young age.  I wonder what he will want to do when he gets old enough to get a job?

This old car that Willie, Sissy and Larry climbed into every morning to make their trip to the Dogwood School, didn't have a working heater in it.  So as the mornings got colder, their trips to school did too.  On one of those particularly cold days, Willie decided to try something that wasn't such a good idea, but he wasn't actually thinking about what could happen only what he wanted to happen.  He wanted the end result to be a warm car so they could travel to school comfortably.

_So how does putting an oil heater in the car sound?  Not so good you say?  Well you would be right!  Willie put that oil heater in the car, closed the car door and went inside to finish getting ready for school.  He and the kids came out to get in the car and when they opened the door...smoke came bellowing out, but the car thankfully wasn't on fire, but the entire inside of the car was black.

They were late for school that day.  There was lots of cleaning to do to the inside Larry's favorite car before they could roll down the road to Dogwood.

That mistake never happened again.  Cold or colder...heater or no heater...no one put a oil heater in that car ever again.  It was safer and not nearly as messy to just take extra blankets and quilts to cover up with in the cold months of winter on those trips to and from school.
