Baby Girl Like a Bullet 11/08/2011

The pregnancy was quite rough for Helen!  Not only did she have to contend with what seemed like continuous morning sickness, she would without warning have to find a bucket to throw up in.   Did I tell you that Helen was a tough lady?  Well, for someone with such a low tolerance for pain, this gal could go through a lot and keep on going. (kind of like a timex...if you know what I mean)
She had a lot of aches and pains, so when the labor started, she wasn't sure if it was labor or just another problem to contend with.  She finally realized that this was different this time, she realized that she was in labor...not only hard labor in the front and pelvic area, but also all through her lower back.  She knew this baby was going to come today.

She and Willie took Larry and Sissy to Mama and Papa Rhodes house and headed to the Sikeston Hospital which used to be the Welsh Funeral Home.  They had packed them an overnight bag so they could just spend the night and Willie and Helen would have one less thing to worry about (make that 2 less babies)

Dr A.C. Sergeant was her doctor, but wasn't there when they arrived.  The nurses told them that when she was ready to deliver this baby, they would get the doctor there in time.  I'm not sure that Helen quite believed them, but had no choice but to keep having contractions and keep asking for Dr Sergeant.  Willie would rub her back and be as much of a support as he knew how to be.  He was excited that they were having another baby, but hated to see his Helen in so much pain.

She was in HARD labor for several hours and just knew that the baby was about to come.  She told the nurses to get the doctor there and they said as soon as the baby's head was in the birth canal. She told them that the baby was about to come out.  The nurse called Dr Sergeant and he assured her that he was on his way.  (Little did any of them know, but Dr Sergeant was on the other side of the railroad tracks and was held up by a train going by...)

Helen told them she couldn't wait for him...she was having this baby.  There had just been another child delivered in the delivery room and they didn't even have the area cleaned up yet, when they took her in there.

Dr Sarno was called.  But before he could step into the delivery room... a baby girl shot out like a bullet and the nurse caught her.  They named that baby girl Linda Helen... after her mom!
