Celebrating Christmas in March 11/01/2011
When they stepped off the porch at Eunice and Roy's...Willie had Larry jump up on his back - it was time to re-bond with his buddy. Helen carried Sissy piggy back as they ran down the road back to the apartment...the race was on to see who could get to the door first. Of course, Willie won, but he let Helen think she was gonna beat him and then pulled ahead right before they got to the steps. It just dawned on the kids that since daddy was home, they could now finish celebrating Christmas. Helen had thought back in November of last year they would be having Christmas together in December like everyone else. But when it didn't turn out that way, she told the kids that they would celebrate with daddy when he got home...no matter when that was. Well...today was the day and they couldn't wait any longer to open that last present. For the past 3 1/2 months those little Christmas presents had been shook and rattled until the paper felt like you were touching cloth. While they were waiting to be opened...If the tape started to come loose, Helen would put fresh tape on the ends and on the side. She had been determined to keep them wrapped until Willie got home. The kids opened their presents and mom went to the kitchen to finish up their "Christmas in March" supper. It wasn't your typical supper, but it was Willie's favorite...pinto beans and cornbread with fried potatoes. Helen had three years to practice her cooking skills and had become a pretty dang good cook. She called them to the table and they said a prayer of thanks for bringing daddy home safe and sound. After they finished eating, Helen cleared the table while Willie went into the living room with the kids and did some wrestling on the floor. They had a fun time with their daddy which helped them understand that this guy that had appeared in their lives today, was a pretty neat guy and lots of fun. After an evening picking at the kids, Willie was tired and Larry and Sissy were worn out and ready to get in their beds to dream of the fun they enjoyed today. After the kids went to bed, Helen and Willie talked until the wee hours of the morning...just catching up. Sometimes Helen would look over at her husband and feel like she needed to pinch herself...he was really home! Comments Your comment will be posted after it is approved. Leave a Reply | _Author
