Family, Friends and Food 11/03/2011
Willie and Helen were happy it was Sunday and would not only be enjoying time studying the Bible, but would be spending time with some of their dearest friends. Sitting together as a family was important to them and now that daddy was home, it was amazing how much better behaved the kids were during church. At 10:00 on Sunday morning, the service would promptly begin with a song and a prayer. The Sunday School Superintendent, as he was called, would go behind the pulpit and read some scripture and introduce the lesson for the day. They would all stand and he would call on someone to pray right before they were all dismissed to go to their separate Sunday School Classes. Helen would walk the kids to their classes and then come back to sit with Willie in their Adult class in the back of the sanctuary. Before they started their lesson this week, they needed to take care of some business. Helen and Willie wanted to invite the folks there to come to their home for a picnic. They were having family over this next weekend and wanted to include Johnnie and George McVay and anybody else that wanted to be a part. When the class was over, Willie decided he would pick up the kids today. They were excited to show daddy the Noah's Ark pages they colored. They looked so cute in their Sunday clothes as they skipped along beside their daddy. When they got to the pew where mom was and sat down, Sondra picked up a hymnal and cut her eyes over to her mom. She knew that if she started making noise with that book, there would be another tree switch in her future. So, she decided not to make a racket and crawl up in her daddy's lap instead. The song leader invited folks to come and sing in the choir. They didn't have an organized choir, it was just whoever was there that wanted to join them. After a couple of songs and an offering, the pastor asked the congregation to open their Bibles and he preached the sermon he had prepared. When church was dismissed, everyone went outside into the beautiful weather and said their goodbyes. Finally Saturday was here and it was time for the picnic. Helen and Willie set up tables and chairs outside and shucked the corn and got it on to boil. To keep the wind from blowing off the table cloth, Helen put a jar of pickles and Johnnie's basket of fried chicken on the corners of the table. Johnnie made the best fried chicken. She also brought some fresh sliced tomatoes. Aunt Violet and Uncle James Lomax were there along with Aunt Polly, Jane and Frank. The revival was starting tomorrow, so the visiting preacher (who was blind) and his wife came too. Besides the fried chicken, corn and tomatoes...there was a big pot of fresh green beans, deviled eggs, homemade rolls and Missouri Jane's chocolate cake for dessert. What a great time they had enjoying a meal with their friends and family. The weather had been beautiful and the company couldn't have been better. This was the first of many times that Helen and Willie would entertain guests in their home with a delicious meal. Comments Your comment will be posted after it is approved. Leave a Reply | _Author
