Fresh Fried Chicken and Labor 11/18/2011

Willie finished out the school year at Wyatt, MO and found out that he was hired for the coming year at Dogwood School outside of East Prairie.  One of the things that had concerned him had been being able to get back into the swing of teaching after being away from it for such a long time.  When he was on the USS West Virginia, teaching was the fartherest thing from his mind.  His concerns then were to survive and get back home to his wife and children.
When he returned home, he, Helen and the kids had lived on what the service provided for them until he could land a job at the Soybean Oil Mill at Ristine.  They added Linda to the family and decided to live on it once again and move to Arkansas.   They did fine for a little over a year until there was another one on the way.  I know it seems crazy that they didn't think about being careful about conceiving again, but I just love the fact that they had learned to "go with the flow" so to speak with every circumstance that came their way.  Most people now a days would play the "blame game" and end up in divorce.  Not Willie and Helen!  They put on their big boy and big girl pants and moved on...literally..."moved" on.

Once Willie returned to the classroom, his concerns were melted away as he got back to doing what he loved to do...teach kids.  They all loved him and respected him as their teacher.  Summer was almost over and he was glad that in a couple of weeks he would be teaching at Dogwood.

Helen was at the end of the pregnancy and the baby could actually come any day now.  Linda wasn't quite 2 yet, but was as busy as could be...you had to watch her like a hawk or she would draw on the walls or get into some other kind of mischief.  Larry was being held back a year in school this year...I think it was probably a combination of things, but his difficulty with speech surely played a factor in that.  This meant that he and Sondra would now just be a year apart in school.

On this beautiful September day in 1950, Helen, Willie and the kids all went to Polly and her husband Bill's house.  Helen and Polly chased some chickens around the back yard and wrung their heads off so they could cook up some fresh chicken for lunch.  Nothing like fresh fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes and sliced tomatoes - makes for some "good eatin"!  The kids all ate and Helen was getting ready to sit down to eat when she went into labor.  It must have been all the chicken chasin that helped the labor along.

Polly rushed her to the doctor and sure enough she was in full blown labor.  The doctor tried a new technique.... (come back tomorrow and find out)
