Jim Bo Is Home! 11/20/2011
Helen and Willie came home with their 4th baby and were overjoyed to have him as a part of the Tollison family. They hadn't planned on having another baby so close in age to Linda , but couldn't be happier. This little baby boy swaddled in a soft blanket and laying across the living room couch was already just as important to Helen and Willie as their other 3 children. He was their little Jim Bo! _Jimmy Lee Tollison was such a cute little baby brother! Linda, who would be turning 2 on September 4th wasn't that fond of letting him have her mommy and daddy's attention, but didn't mind at all when Sissy held him. Sissy was now 7 1/2 years old and was old enough to actually be a big help to her mom. Helen showed her how to hold him to support his neck and back and she was a natural at it. Larry would be 9 years old on the 17th of this month and was tickled that he had a little brother that tied their family to 3 boys to 3 girls. _Helen had so much difficulty when she was breast feeding Linda, that she felt that the best thing for her was to bottle feed Jimmy. She was not happy about it, but knew that the possibility of having problems again were just too great! It didn't mean she loved him any less than the other kids, she just wanted to be careful. It was way more trouble to bottle feed than to breast feed. Keeping the bottles and nipples boiled and sterile was in itself a lot of work. She also had to heat up each bottle before the feeding and make sure the formula was the right temperature. She would turn the bottle upside down and shake some of the formula on the inside of her wrist to make sure it would be okay for Jimmy to have. Sometimes she would let Sissy feed him if she was really careful. Then she'd hand him back over to an adult to burp him, because that was a little too hard for her to maneuver. The bottles were boiled in a sterilizer similar to the one pictured here. This was used as well as a saucepan to boil the nipples to sterilize them. It was during the 1950s that it was discovered that moms no longer needed to sterilize their bottles and nipples, but it had become so commonplace that most moms still practiced it. They always thought it was better to be safe than sorry. Helen didn't know about the finding, so she made sure her bottles and nipples were safe for her Jim Bo! Helen had been home with Jimmy a couple of days when something happened that scared this 28 year old mom. (come back tomorrow to find out what happened)...
