Making the Apartment Home! 11/12/2011

They made it to Jonesboro, Arkansas without any mishaps.  They had to stop along the way to use the bathroom and to eat the picnic lunch Eunice had prepared for them to eat along the way.  Smelling that fried chicken and not being able to eat it was pure torture, but made it all the better by the time they stopped for lunch.
They stopped just outside of Paragould, Arkansas to have their lunch.  Helen nursed Linda while she drank tea that had been iced down before they left.  Even though it was cold outside, a lot of the ice was melted, but the tea was still cool enough to be iced tea.  Larry, Sondra and Willie chawed down on the fried chicken and potato salad.  How sweet of her mom to send them off with some home cooking to eat on their way to Arkansas.

When they arrived at their destination, the kids were wore out and so were mom and dad.  Even though they were tired, Larry and Sondra explored the empty home while helping mom and dad carry in some of the smaller stuff.  Helen had the boxes labeled so the kids knew right where to put them.  She helped Willie with the larger items in between taking care of Linda and emptying boxes.

The apartment was set up pretty quickly...that can happen when you don't have a lot to set up!  There was plenty of room for their meager belongings.  When Helen got the kitchen supplies put away, she was anxious to try out the stove.  She had never had a stove as nice as this one...it had an actual oven and several burners.  She got out her iron skillet and mixed up a cake and made a pineapple upside-down cake.  Smelling that cake in the oven made the apartment home right away.  You know how when you move into a place where other folks have lived...it's not home until the smells are from your family?  Well that was what it was like there.

Willie had gotten his college classes chosen and his books rented and was so thankful that he had been given the opportunity to go to school on the GI bill (which was officially called Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944).  He was able to go to school without adding any financial burden on his family.

Willie and Helen talked to Larry and Sondra about starting at a new school.  They explained to them that they would be walking to the bus stop and catching the city bus that would take them the rest of the way to school.  They listened intently to their instructions and knew that mom and dad would show them what to do their first trip to the bus stop.
