Mrs. Midget's Garden Plot 11/02/2011
Willie and Helen were getting back into the routine of their lives and the kids were continuing to re-bond with their daddy. Getting those homemade biscuits with white gravy every morning with a big ole cup 'o' joe was like heaven to "Wild Bill". He knew that he hadn't lived in this apartment that long, but it felt just like home. Of course as the saying goes, "home is where your heart is" describes how it should be and this couldn't be truer for him. His heart has always been with Helen and now with these little sleepy eyed kids sitting at the breakfast table with him. Life is good! Mrs Midget lived across the road from them next to the schoolyard and for years had grown a large garden, but as she aged just didn't want to put in the work. And besides, she had canned for years and had plenty stored up. She offed her garden spot to Willie and Helen and they jumped at the opportunity to grow fresh vegetables for their family. As it turns out, Willie had a green thumb and everything they planted grew and multiplied. Big tomatoes, okra, green beans, leaf lettuce, green onions and more squash than they knew what to do with...was just an example of the bounty that grew in that nice garden spot. When they had their first ripe tomato, they would pull a few green ones to fry...but not until they ate that first ripe one. Willie went across the street to pull some leaf lettuce for wilted lettuce (one of his favorites) and low and behold there on that vine was one of the nicest ripe tomatoes you ever saw. I'm sure you know what happened next...yep...not only did he pull that juicy tomato off the vine...he pulled 2 green ones for frying. I think Helen was just as excited as Willie was when he brought in the ripe tomato, because she didn't let on, but she wanted some fried green tomatoes too! She got the lard hot on the stove and Willie rolled the sliced green tomatoes in the corn meal seasoned with salt and pepper. As Willie liked to say...they are gonna be so good, they'll make your tongue slap your cheeks. And you know what? They were that good! Comments Your comment will be posted after it is approved.
