The Hunt for Another Place Is On! 11/24/2011

It didn't bother Helen that they were having to move yet again.  She always felt like it was a good move for them every time they had to pack up their belongings.  From one move to the next, the homes seemed to be just a tad better than the previous one, so in her mind they were all good moves.  Of course the move from New Madrid to Matthews, MO turned out to be a bad one, but it started out good because it put her close to family and they could rent that apartment over Aunt Violet Lomax's garage for little of nothing.  She loved all her visits with Aunt Violet when she was there and would always feel really close to her.  She and Willie had no idea that the Matthews apartment would be infested with rats and eventually be blown away by a tornado.  Remember Helen along with Larry and Sissy moved before the tornado hit and Willie came home from his basic training to find it gone.  (If you want to read that story again go to A Sailor, His Family and a Tornado)
This particular move was needed due to the bad well water and they didn't want to have to worry about any of them getting sick.  If one of the kids pumped some of that well water and drank it without first boiling it, they could get really sick.  So it was off for the hunt for a place to live.  They decided it would be best to stay in East Prairie where they would be close to Willie's family and close to his teaching job at Dogwood, so they started searching for a place in the immediate area.  They really wanted to be moved before the colder weather started.  Moving in the fall would be great or even sooner if they could find a place.

When Willie, Sissy and Larry got home from school, they would load up in Willie's old car and start driving around East Prairie to see if anybody had a "for rent" sign in front of their home.  As they drove around, they were about to give up when they saw a little 2 bedroom cinder brick home with a for rent sign in the small front yard.  It was located about 8 blocks from where they were now living, so the move would not be too bad.  They hopped out of the car and took a look at it and were excited to find that it had an indoor bathroom with a shower in it.  This was it...this was their new home and they would move here as soon as they could get packed.

Larry and Sissy were again expected to help with the packing and carrying out of the boxes.  Being the older kids in the family had its drawbacks sometimes.  They would rather be playing with Linda or holding Jimmy instead of helping mom and dad with the packing, but oh well!  As usual, they did their part with the move.  Sometimes their help was needed to watch Linda and keep her out of the street and other times they would watch Jimmy so he wouldn't roll off the couch while mom left the room.

They took one last look through the house they were leaving to make sure they weren't leaving anything behind.  They were indeed leaving something behind, but they had to leave it!  Do you have any ideas what that was?  (stay tuned)

Could it have been Linda's artwork?
