Money and a Move 12/09/2011
The Christmas carols have been sung, the ham and fruit salad have been eaten and the decorations have been put away. Willie with the help of Larry took the very dry Christmas tree out to the curb. They would take it to the ditch later to dispose of it, but for right now, they would leave it there. Now that Christmas was over, Willie had to seriously think about doing something to take care of his family. They needed money to pay the bills ... he knew there were jobs out there...he just needed to find one. It would require that they move again, but National Life could hire him as an agent in the Sikeston area not far from East Prairie. He talked it over with Helen and they decided to make the move. They found a house in Sikeston on Ruth Street that had an extra bedroom perfect for the girls. They could now have their own bedroom and the boys could have their own too even if it was a little small. The girls would be able to have their girly things around and the boys could stretch out across their bed and know they wouldn't have to listen to all the pretend talk with the dolls. Sondra sure loved her bride doll...she carried it everywhere with her...she was afraid to let it out of her sight for too long...she would be so sad if anything ever happened to her prized possession. It was the end of December and bitterly cold outside, so this move was gonna be a cold one. As they packed, Helen made a pot of coffee for her and Willie and some hot chocolate with marshmallows on top for the kids to warm them up. She had a pot of vegetable soup on the stove simmering for them to have for lunch. They would eat the soup from Styrofoam bowls and use the plastic spoons...everything else but the pot was packed. Paula was eating "real" food now, so she would have a small bowl of soup too! After the soup was eaten, Helen washed the pot and climbed in the borrowed truck that was loaded down with their belongings. It would take more than one trip to get their things from East Prairie to Sikeston. By now in their marriage, they had actually accumulated a few things. Frank was able to help Willie with the heavy items and Larry even lent his 11 year old muscles to carry bed headboards, mirrors and such. Little Jim Bo made every step his big brother made as he followed him from room to room. Linda carried out some pillows and a small box with her play cups and the pots and pans that were actually given to Paula for Christmas. She loved to pretend she was cooking in them for her baby sister. Sissy helped by carrying Paula on her hip and keeping an eye on Linda Bug. They arrived at Ruth Street and began to unloaded the truck..Helen directed where to put everything. First thing would be to get the beds put together, so there would be a place for the 3 little ones to take their naps. Helen stayed at the new place with all the kids except Larry who went back with his Grandpa and Dad to help with the next truckload. As they drove off, Sissy began unpacking the boxes in the kitchen while mom put Linda and Paula in one room and Jimmy in the other for an afternoon nap. They didn't resist, because they were pooped. The truck backed up in front of the house with the last load...which consisted of a bunch of left over junk (like flower pots and the water hose and stuff like that)... stuff that most people have on their last load of moving...they were no different.
