Murray Lane - Sikeston, Missouri 12/15/2011
When Willie got up to get ready for work this morning, he was able to do it without getting all sweaty. He was actually a little chilly with the air conditioner blowing full blast. He wasn't the only one chilly...the kids were already up with long pants and sweat shirts on...Linda was on the couch all covered up with her blanket. They would have to learn how to adjust the new air conditioner to the right temp. Willie stepped out the door on that little house on Ruth Street, he could tell that today was going to be a hot one. That's exactly why he decided to go a little early today, so he could get a jump on the heat. He wouldn't be going directly to collect the monthly money owed the National Life Insurance Company quite yet though. He was going to go down Ruth Street and head up New Madrid Street ... all the way to Murray Lane, because he wanted to see if there was anything to rent up that way. When he turned the corner at Murray Lane, he liked that their were only homes on one side of the street and a big empty field on the other. As he walked down the road, he did notice that there were a couple of houses that had "For Rent" signs in them. When he got to the "400" block of Murray Lane, there was a house that seemed like a great possibility for his family. The rent sign had a telephone number on it, so he wrote on the back of his notebook and would call as soon as he gets back to the office. He finished doing his insurance calls and started back to the office. He wanted to give himself enough time to call the number he had seen earlier on that "For Rent" sign. The telephone numbers in Sikeston started with GR1 (which is 471, but they used the letters)...then the number. When Willie called the number, a very kind sounding lady answered. As it turns out, her voice didn't deceive her...she was indeed a very nice lady. Her name was Mrs. McClellen and she was anxious to meet this family. And if the Tollison family was as nice as Willie sounded on the phone, this would work out fine. She told Willie that the rent would run them $75 per month and invited him and Helen to come by her house so she could meet them both. In the evening when he went home, Willie told Helen about the house he had found while on his job that morning. It wasn't anything fancy, but was much better than where they were now living. He told her about his first impression of Mrs. McClellen and that he had a good feeling about renting from her. They left the older kids with the younger ones and headed to Mrs. McClellen's home located a couple of streets over from the rent house on Murray Lane. She met them at the door and invited them in...they visited for a bit, then asked to see the rental home. They both felt that the 3 bedrooms which were larger than the ones in the Ruth Street house, would give the kids and themselves more room. Also there was a full bathroom with a tub in the middle of the house. They discussed the rental agreement with Mrs McClellen and she let them know that could move in right away.
