Ordination, Questions and a Hawker! 12/22/2011
_Jim Bo is sharp as a tack...never seems to forget anything! For instance, during the season for cantaloupes, apples and watermelons, a peddler would walk down the road barking out his wares. Referred to as a hawker, the peddler would have his wagon full of vegetables and fruit and push it up and down the street in town trying to sell them. Jimmy thought it was the funniest thing hearing him holler, "Cantaloupes! Apples! Watermelons! He would go around the house yelling those words in his sweet little 2 year old voice, trying to imitate the hawker! We will find out later in the story how knowing those hawker phrases would get him in trouble. The Tollisons had been members of the Baptist Church in Sikeston for quite a while now and tried to help out as much as they could. The most important thing to them was laying a foundation of truth in the lives of their children, while teaching them the importance of being a part of a church family. Since Willie was an ordained deacon, he was asked to be a part of many of the important decisions and help in the services. One such service was the Sunday that Brother Newman was going to be ordained as a minister of the gospel. As part of the ordination service, Mrs. Newman was questioned about the role she would play as the pastor's wife as well as being questioned on certain Bible truths. In questioning Brother Newman, they would be able to determine how schooled he was in the scriptures. He had to be able to answer questions about the churches ordinances such as...What part does baptism play in the conversion experience? What is the Lord's Supper? What is it portraying?...those type of questions. Willie, as deacon, was one of the questioners, asking questions that he thought were important. Since Helen was up front with Willie during the ordination service, Linda and Paula sat with Sondra, and Larry had Jimmy with him, sitting in the back with Larry's church friends. Right in the middle of the questioning of Brother Newman, all of a sudden from the back of the church you could hear a sweet little 2 year old voice yell out, "Cantaloupes! Apples! Watermelons!" It came as a shock to everyone, even Larry and the other guys, who couldn't hold their laughter. They did a lot of shaking trying to hold back their giggles. Nothing like a 2 year old hawker making his presence known in the middle of a serious moment, to get your giggle box turned over. Larry put his hand over Jim Bo's mouth and told him to "Shhh"...because mom was looking. If you've ever had your mom look at you when you are acting up in church...you know that "look". It is one of those, "straighten up or come sit with me looks." Both Jimmy and Larry were getting the evil eye from Helen and they knew they were in trouble. After the final prayer was said and the service was over. They were dismissed to go to the back room for refreshments. But before Jimmy was allowed to go, he had to have a talk with mom. He was smart enough to know that even though he didn't get a spanking, he was in trouble. Helen told him that he was never to yell like that in church because it bothered other people and warned that next time there would be a spanking consequence. He just said "Okay mommy", and looked at her with those big brown eyes, which at the time, looked innocent! They went to the back room and got a piece of cake and Helen wished Brother and Sister Newman blessings on the ministry there. Jimmy was wishing he had a big ole slice of watermelon!
