The Summer of 1952 12/02/2011
It was the end of May and instead of continuing with his original plan to sell insurance right away, Willie found out about a job in St Louis at an Airplane Manufacturing Plant where he could make some good money for a few months. It would mean that he would be away during the week and home on the weekends. So for Helen who is now 7 months along would mean she would be raising the children alone throughout the week. The summer of 1952 brought lots of changes! Not many of them affected the Tollison household, but nonetheless were the subject of conversation both at home and at work. President Truman decided not to run for reelection, there were UFO sightings by an air traffic controller in Washington D.C., the cost of a loaf of bread had risen to 16 cents and that blouse at Garbers or Sears (when she lost her baby weight) was gonna cost Helen $1.98 and a shirt for Willie would be $3.66. With both Willie and Helen working, they wanted to be able to buy a few things here and there, but money was so tight, it was difficult. Willie made a decision about his car that was not thought through like it probably should have been. He decided to get rid of his old car with the hole in the floorboard and purchase this jeep he was wanting. Trouble with that was he never got the papers on the jeep and wasn't able to even drive it. I guess we all make mistakes in some of our decision making processes and as a result put ourselves in some not so pleasant spots. As the summer of 1952 continued, Helen was nearing her due date and had to stop working. It was becoming harder on her every time she went to the doctor to get her pelvic bones popped back in place. When he would do that, she would immediately feel light headed and nauseous. When she got home she would have to lie down for a while to recuperate from the procedure. When Willie was home on the weekend of July 21st, he realized that Helen shouldn't be left alone this close to her due date and went ahead and quit his job in St Louis to be there with her. They had made the decision to have this baby at home and had already made arrangements with Dr Wyatt to be there when the time came. Now it was just a waiting game to see when this would happen. Any guesses as to how this delivery will be? Comments Your comment will be posted after it is approved. Leave a Reply | _Author
